Murals & Mosaics 

Immerse yourself in the life of local Cuban artists while you visit their neighborhoods. Start with the famous Callejon de Hamel, a pedestrian alley adorned with murals and frescos. Elias Asseff, Cuban historian of Afro-Cuban religions, will guide you to explore the roots of the Afro-Cuban religion along with a fabulous mix of art, music, and traditions. The Hamel open to the public and is a mix of young artisans and Cuban individuals which will provide opportunities to engage with these independent folks in their own environment.  Here you will have the opportunity to interact with self-employed Cuban artists who sell their Santero street art.

Next, meet José Fuster, also known as the “Picasso of the Caribbean,” who has decorated his home and part of his neighborhood in Jaimanitas with a kaleidoscope of intricate mosaics and colorful sculptures. This extravagant stylized area is called Fusterlandia and reminds guests of Gaudí’s work in Spain.  You will have the opportunity to explore and interact with community members as you explore the area.  Following your art engagement, take a break while you enjoy lunch at an independent local “paladar”, a privately-owned restaurant. Take this opportunity to experience the entrepreneurial endeavors of the Cuban people. After lunch, head towards the last stop of the day, as you visit the San José Craft Market. Located in a warehouse in the harbor, it was restored a few years ago and today is the largest indoor craft market in Havana. Here you will have the opportunity to interact with self-employed Cuban individuals “Cuentapropistas” who run the privately-owned open air art kiosks and sell their arts and crafts.

How you're supporting the community:

Fuster has spent over 10 years rebuilding and decorating the fishing town of Jaimanitas. His artwork has brought many visitors to the neighborhood which have allowed cafeterias and artisan shops to flourish. By visiting this uniquely artistic place you are contributing to the wellbeing of the community.
